Nicaragua School

Kindergarten and Elementary School
Location: Villa Reconciliacion, Managua

HISTORY

The school was founded in the end of the year 2000 and started functioning in 2001 with kindergarten from 1st to 3rd level and primary school classes from grade 1 to 3. The number of students in that year was 79. In the year 2002 more classes were added to the primary school.

The building is located in the heart of Managua in an area called Villa Reconciliacion or Reconciliation Village. In this area, former rebels, civilians, and ex-militaries were brought to live together in an effort to forget the wounds of the civil war and live together in peace. That is why it is called the "Reconciliation Village".

Most of the population is very poor. The school fees range from US$2 to US$5 per month. Many have difficulties to pay it every month.

In the year 2006 the school enrolled a record 136 students but as the months went by parents withdrew children mostly for financial reasons reaching a low of 88 students at the end of the year.

WORK DONE

Foundation Emanuele Antola donated 6 desktop computers to the school in the year 2006 and the school offers computer classes in its curriculum. It is the only school in the neighborhood to offer these special programs.

PRESENT FINANCIAL NEEDS

This project is requesting funds to improve the facilities, paint the building, and purchase new desks for the classrooms. Each desk costs the equivalent to $15.

In 2007 the school enrolled 88 students but many of them have difficulties to pay the small monthly tuition which creates difficulties for the maintenance of the school monthly budget.
