Donate a Motorcycle to Africa

This program sponsors a motorcycle to a health/social worker in West Africa, either Ghana or Burkina Faso.

As per June 2010, two motorcycles have been donated. One to the Mafi-Zongo project in Ghana and the other one to Burkina Faso.

Motorcycles are a very useful means of transportation for the health/social workers in that area of Africa and we are continuing to request funds for this program.

The project manager reported that the rest of the funds have been
secured from other funding agencies.

This is a request for $1,500 USD to start a Diagnostic Lab to improve the medical services offered by the Abha Light Foundation in Kibera, a squatters slum in Nairobi, Kenya.

The project is a partnership between AMURT and the Burkina Faso Department of Health. Main component is the training of village midwives in remote tribal villages. Educating women in the project area about maternal health, sexual health, opposing Female Genital Mutilation, literacy training, training village health agents. 37 active village midwives and 12 village health agents working as per December 2007.

To train village midwives for every 7 km radius, to reduce maternal mortality and infant mortality, to combat female genital mutilation, to educate women and communities about health, focus on maternal and sexual health, to create leadership models for women.

Financial Budget: *
The direct annual budget for the six years has been USD 30,000 to 35,000. We are currently revising and restructuring the project. A new budget will be ready in January and see new funding. The new budget is likely to be a bit higher.

Financial sources: *
The last three years we have had funding from NORAD/FOKUS KVINNER through AMURT Norway. Their funding will end at the end of 2007. We have also had help from AMURTEL USA, AMURT UK, and AMURT Italy and private donors. At the moment we have no funding for 2008.

Fund transfer modalities: *
The best way is to transfer funds by Bank wire to the AMURT account in Ouagadougou, the bank account is on the web-site. Funds can also be transferred via AMURT USA>

Wish list:
Currently we are trying to get small contributions from several sources to manage the operating expenses for the next months until we secure a new grant.
»
Request:
We are between funding for the project. NORAD in Norway has a limit of three years. The funding stops at the end of 2007. We knew this before. The reason we have waited to apply for further grants, is that we wanted to wait for the independent evaluation that was conducted in November. We have just received the complete report in French, it’s now being translated. Our program is a partnership with the Burkina Faso Department of Health. I am going to Burkina Faso, and will be having meetings there to reach agreement on our future program and budget. Then we will apply for a proper grant.

In the meanwhile we need to find funds to maintain the minimum operating expense. I am applying to several sources in the hope to get enough to continue the operations for a few months, until proper funding is secured. I am attaching a spreadsheet with the minimum operating expenses.

If you would like the full budget for the whole project, the new plan and budget will be ready in January.

Abha Seva Sadan Multitherapy Charitable Health Centre

The project was a recipient of a Micro-donation from the Foundation Emanuele Antola in the year 2007. We were very happy with what they are doing and we plan to continue supporting it in the year 2009. You can donate to this project or if you have medical skills you are welcome there as a volunteer.

1. Project Description:

A charitable rural health care project, combining multi-disciplinary conventional and alternative medical outpatient services with health education programmes in the villages of the community.

2. Area where it is located:

In the state of Jharkhand in northeastern India, close to the border to W. Bengal. This rural region is amongst the most neglected and underdeveloped in India. The project is 15 km outside of Bokaro Steel City, an industrial town, from which it has good access via a connecting large road.

3. Project History:

The project started in April 2005 with the purchase of 0.9 acres of undeveloped land. During the following weeks several medical camps were held on the land using tents. Within 2 months a small temporary clinic building was constructed, so that regular outpatient services could commence in acupuncture, homeopathy and allopathy (Western medicine). Due to financial limitations, until present acupuncture is held 3 days a week, homeopathy 5 days a week and allopathy one day a week.
In August 2005 water hygiene programmes were started in the surrounding villages, which have continued in regular intervalls until present: the villagers are shown how to disinfect their drinking well water cheaply and effectively using bleaching powder (chlorine), and how to kill breeding parasites by spraying diluted phenyl into stagnant water areas.
