Empowering Women in Purulia: A Well for the Khatanga Women’s Center

Khatanga, Purulia, West Bengal, India – In the rugged, red-earth landscapes of Purulia—a district known for its tribal communities, vibrant folk traditions, and persistent water scarcity—a transformative project is taking shape. A new well is being dug to serve a Women’s Center in Khatanga, providing not just water but opportunity, empowerment, and peace for hundreds of women in the region.

The Need: Water Scarcity and Women’s Struggles

Purulia, one of West Bengal’s most drought-prone districts, faces severe water shortages, especially in summer. Women and girls often walk kilometers daily to fetch water, losing time that could be spent on education, work, or personal growth. The Khatanga Women’s Center, partially sponsored by a philanthropic foundation, aims to change this by ensuring clean, accessible water right on its premises.

Beyond water, the center will serve as a safe space for women—offering meditation, skill-building workshops, and community support. With a capacity for 200 women at a time, it will be a hub for mental well-being, empowerment, and solidarity in a region where women’s voices are often marginalized.

The Project: A Well for Health and Harmony

The new well will:
Provide reliable water for drinking, sanitation, and gardening.
Reduce the burden on women who currently trek long distances for water.
Support the Center’s activities, including meditation, yoga, and vocational training.

Why This Matters

Purulia’s women face multiple challenges—limited education, economic hardship, and social restrictions. A dedicated Women’s Center with its own water source means:

  • More time for learning and self-improvement.
  • Better health with clean water readily available.
  • A sanctuary for mental and emotional well-being through meditation.

The Bigger Picture: Women Leading Change

This project aligns with India’s Jal Jeevan Mission (ensuring water access for all) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). When women have security, resources, and a supportive community, entire families—and villages—thrive.

How You Can Help

While the well is partially funded, additional support can ensure:

  • Deeper, more sustainable water access.
  • Maintenance and long-term use.
  • Expansion of the Center’s programs.

Donations of any size will make a difference.
