Empowering Burkina Faso: Drying Mangoes, Tomatoes, and Pineapples for a Brighter Future

Introduction

In the heart of Burkina Faso’s Bissiri village lies a humanitarian project that aims to boost the local economy and improve the lives of its residents. Spearheaded by Dada Padmeshananda and supported by AMURT, the project focuses on drying mangoes, tomatoes, and pineapples to create value-added products and promote self-sufficiency within the community. This article delves into the significance of the project and its positive impact on the village.

The Vision: Creating Economic Opportunities

The primary objective of the Bissiri Master Unit project is to stimulate the local economy through cottage industries and community-driven initiatives. One such endeavor involves drying fruits and vegetables using a professional eco-friendly dryer. The innovative technology ensures the preservation of essential nutrients in the produce while significantly reducing drying time. With the ability to process up to 300 kg of fruits and vegetables daily, this initiative not only adds value to the local agricultural produce but also provides an opportunity for sustainable income generation.

The Role of AMURT: Empowering Local Farmers

In collaboration with local farmers, AMURT has successfully implemented agro-ecological cultivation techniques across a 3-hectare plot of land. This eco-friendly approach includes the use of compost and manure as fertilizers, neem-based products as pesticides, and the integration of trees within cultivated areas. The holistic approach aims to regenerate soil, optimize water infiltration, and ensure long-term productivity on each plot. Additionally, the project has introduced water pumps and drip irrigation systems to increase agricultural yield and conserve water resources.

The Moringa Miracle: A Nutritional Powerhouse

Among the crops cultivated in the region, Moringa holds a special place. This fast-growing, drought-resistant tree is known for its high nutritional content, with leaves containing valuable nutrients like protein, potassium, calcium, vitamin C, and essential amino acids. AMURT’s Moringa project has developed a range of Moringa-based products, such as Moringa herbal tea and Moringa powder, which serve as extraordinary food supplements. The project not only promotes permaculture and agroforestry but also empowers local women in the processing of Moringa products, creating stable sources of revenue and promoting health within the community.

Primary Healthcare Center: A Lifeline for the Community

Since 2010, AMURT has subsidized a primary healthcare center that operates round the clock to cater to various medical needs of the community. The center provides essential services and medications for cases of malaria, diarrhea, infections, wounds, and more. AMURT’s support has been crucial in ensuring that healthcare remains accessible and affordable to all, especially those who cannot afford treatments in times of emergency.

Education and Community Empowerment

Recognizing the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty, AMURT has established a junior high school in Bissiri. The organization has constructed classrooms, subsidized school fees, provided school books and uniforms, and even arranged free medical checkups for students. Additionally, AMURT offers various extracurricular activities like drawing, music, yoga, meditation, tree nursing, and reforestation programs to foster holistic development among the students.

Ko Nere Program: Access to Water and Women Empowerment

AMURT’s Ko Nere Program focuses on easing access to water and strengthening women’s associations to generate income. The program facilitates the implementation of community-based water wells, equips them with manual pumps, and trains local women in organic vegetable cultivation, composting, and tree nursery techniques. This initiative not only improves water accessibility but also empowers women in rural communities to enhance their livelihoods and sustain their families.

Microdonation for an Electricity Generator

To further enhance the drying process of fruits and vegetables, the project requires an electricity generator of 8 KVA. The estimated cost for this purchase and shipment is 1350 USD, with the project already providing 350 USD. AMURT seeks a microdonation of 1000 USD from the Antola Foundation to make this crucial addition.

Conclusion

The drying project in Bissiri village, Burkina Faso, exemplifies the power of humanitarian efforts to uplift communities and promote sustainable development. Through innovative initiatives like the professional eco-friendly dryer and the cultivation of Moringa, AMURT is making significant strides in boosting the local economy, enhancing healthcare, providing quality education, and empowering women. The project’s vision for a brighter future is a testament to the transformative impact of collective action and compassion. With the support of organizations like the Foundation Emanuele Antola, the Bissiri community can continue to thrive and create a better tomorrow for all its members.
